Latest Article: Meditation Equals Serenity

Meditation is a practice that involves focusing on an object, a sound or your breath. The idea behind meditation is to focus or concentrate your thoughts on one relaxing thing for a sustained period of time. Usually 15 - 30 minutes will do.

It is important to know that there is no experience that should be desired during meditation.

You should begin your meditation by sitting comfortably in a cross legged position, when possible. This method is best known in the West as zasen, or sitting meditation, of Zen. Sitting in meditation helps quiet your mind and leaves you feeling clear, peaceful and relaxed.

Benefits of:

Although Benefits are not sought, many benefits are achieved from daily meditation practice.

By practicing daily meditation you will experience, relaxation, increased awareness, mental focus, clarity and a sense of peace.

In some people meditation can help relieve stress or anxiety related disorders such as depression, insomnia, headaches, poor concentration and hypertension (high blood pressure.)

Those who practice meditation regularly claim it can free you from all affliction. If meditation is practiced on a regular basis, these beneficial changes become relatively permanent.

The Practice of:

Like most skills, meditation requires you to practice in order to achieve positive and satisfying results. Of course longer meditation periods create better results and this will be realized when you build up some experience.

Some people use this time as a form of worship but the great thing about meditation is that you can practice it without any religious overtones whatsoever.

As you begin to practice meditation more frequently, it will become easier. Even though, meditation can be performed anywhere, it is always best to practice the ritual in the same space for comfort and sense of security.

After you have mastered meditation, the mind is unchanging like the stillness of water in a windless place. In the still mind, and in the depths of meditation, your eternal Self reveals itself. The ultimate goal is for meditation to become a continuous state of mind. If you get distracted, do some breathing meditation to calm your mind. Unfortunately, once the mind thinks of some other factors like mental commentary, analysis, or internal gossip, your meditation will come to an end.

And lastly...

Please take note that while in deep states of meditation, some people become aware of long-buried memories of child abuse or other childhood traumas, so don't be surprised. Once on a regular schedule, meditation becomes a blissful, pleasurable, dynamic experience that you always look forward to.

Latest Article: Meditation Changes Your Life Forever

The problem with research on meditation is that it is limited. Though there is a lot of information of how meditation is useful in various medical conditions, there is limited information on how to meditate so as to see changes in your life.

If you can meditate, then start with meditation for only five minutes a day. You can use any form of meditation that you are comfortable with. But in order to experiment, stick to only five minutes everyday. You will see that within 3 to 4 weeks of starting meditation, you will feel irritable, angry or low for no reason. If you can handle that, continue with it. If you cannot handle it, stop doing the meditation for 2 or 3 days. You will start to feel better again. Start meditation for five minutes a day again. Be consistent with it and you will reach a stage when you will feel happy within yourself. You will also notice unexpectedly good coincidences happen in life. The following changes will be noticed.

CHANGE IN MOOD: You will feel a stability in happy mood. This will be different from the relaxation that will be experienced at the start of meditation. This time anything that bothered you before, will not be bothersome. Instead of a quick change in your mood, your happiness will be long lasting.

CHANGE IN RELATIONSHIPS: After you have gone through the phase of anger and feeling low, you will notice that your relationships with people around you would become better. You will have less confrontation with your partner.

CHANGE IN EFFICIENCY: You will notice that you will have more energy as compared to before. The same job that you found boring, mundane or stressful will become enjoyable. Every person that I have seen in my practice has become more efficient in what they did, with meditation.

CHANGE IN FINANCES: If you are consistent in meditation, you will notice that your financial situation after you have gone through the low phase of meditation, will be better than before you started meditation.

CHANGE IN THE ENVIRONMENT YOU LIVE IN: At some stage, after you start meditation, you will start to get irritable with the clutter around you. In most cases that I have seen, clearing of the attic or giving away old clothes is the norm. It happens spontaneously.

CHANGE IN SOCIAL LIFE: Initially you will feel happy with friends. Then some of them will start to annoy you and then you will decide who you want to remain your friend or not. Instead of going out, you will feel happy with yourself.

CHANGE IN SELF-ESTEEM: As you meditate, your self-confidence will become better before it gets a battering temporarily. Then as your emotional clutter gets cleared with meditation, your self-esteem goes higher.

CHANGE IN LUCK: Initially when I saw people’s lives changing in front of my eyes, I could not believe it. But I can now safely and comfortably write that meditation will change your luck too. You will notice surprisingly pleasant things happen that were not expected.

The above changes will be noticed successively as you increase the time duration of your meditation. At each change in duration, for example, from five minutes to 10 minutes, you will go through the stage of feeling angry and low before you feel better again. In this venture, patience pays.

Latest Article: Yoga And Meditation Meets Science Anatomy Of Yoga

Everyone learns differently, learning about yoga and meditation is no different. Some people try out yoga because their friends are trying it - word-of-mouth is enough to get them started.

Others choose to start yoga and meditation driven mainly by a health scare, or a chronic health condition such as back pain, arthritis - even temporary conditions such as weight loss and pregnancy can benefit from yoga and meditation.

Then, there are those (and I happen to fall into this camp) who like to understand WHY something works. Not necessarily a scientist, but we would like to know enough about the premise of yoga and meditation to be able to satisfy our own minds and more important, any skeptics out there, why yoga and meditation has an impact on your mind and body.

I just finished reading "Anatomy of Hatha Yoga" by H David Coulter, and let me say, this was a perfect level of explanation and detail that helps me to better understand (in lay man's terms) how the various aspects of yoga impact our bodies.

One of the most common problems I've experienced is tight shoulders or shoulder "kinks" and stiff necks. Early on, it became obvious that yoga and meditation helped tremendously with this chronic 20+ year-old problem.

Yoga helps back, shoulder and neck pain in two main ways: reducing stress leading to chemical build-up in your muscles and joints and stretches that keep muscles loose and limber. A combinaton of meditation, breathing and yoga asanas that focus on upper body stretching are extremely effective in reducing this pain.

Its a great book worthy of anyone who is still skeptical or simply just interested in a psuedo medical explanation of how yoga impacts your body.
