Latest Article: The King Of Denial

If I had to take a guess regarding the type of person Barry Bonds is, I would presume he is the type of person who subscribes to the notion that if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around to hear it, then it does not make a sound. Based on Barry’s latest antics yesterday this clearly must be the case. In a new book titled “Game of Shadows: Barry Bonds, Balco and the Steroids Scandal That Rocked Professional Sports,” the authors (Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams) offer thousands of documents, interviews, and secret grand jury testimony of Bonds and other athletes involved in the Balco case, which prove to me and anyone else who considers themselves reasonable that Barry Bonds has been taking steroids since the end of the 1998 season. The authors were also provided with several taped recordings that were given to them by Barry Bonds’ mistress and which point to his steroid use. I know that seems hard to believe, Bonds being the great family man and all, but lets say for the sake of argument that this so called “mistress” really exists and perhaps accept the fact that Bonds is just a bold faced liar and self-righteous hypocrite.

What is Bonds answer to all of this? When asked what he thought of this new book and the excerpts that were featured in this months Sports Illustrated, Bonds acted like it was news to him, and said “I won’t even look at it. For what? There’s no need to.” Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Barry, but if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around to hear it, it does in fact still make a sound. And if a book about your strict regiment of injecting yourself with illegal steroids is written, and you are not around to read it, the book does in fact still exist. Unfortunately for you there will still be people in those woods who will gladly take the time to read all about you, even if you insist on burying your head in the sand or hiding behind one of your children at a press conference. Sadly those are the same children who now know the all-to-sad truth about Barry’s unfaithfulness to his wife, his family, his teammates, and the game of baseball.

Latest Article: Online Sportsbook wizards Switzer Vs. Stoops – Who’s Your Pick!
The Online Sportsbook world was able to find some success for those people who picked Barry Switzer's Oklahoma Sooners teams during the 1980's. Switzer would also have success in the Online Sportsbook world with the Dallas Cowboys as their head coach. If an Online Sportsbook were to take bets on which former Oklahoma sports star would do the best within Oklahoma politics chances are that Barry Switzer may do better than two actual politicians who played for him. The Online Sportsbook world knows about former Sooner and Seattle Seahawks receiver Steve Largent. The Online Sportsbook world is also familiar with former Oklahoma quarterback J.C. Watts. Watts and Largent were both successful Congressmen in the state of Oklahoma, but Barry Switzer reportedly almost carried a Presidential primary single handedly based on his endorsement of a candidate. Switzer probably wouldn't be that well known amongst young bet makers in the Online Sportsbook world unless they are paying attention to Coors commercials that Switzer has appeared in.

Switzer sometimes appears on FoxSports as an analyst for college football. His analysis would be helpful to those in the Online Sportsbook world as long as they don't feel that Switzer is being too bias. Bob Stoops is quite popular amongst a lot of Oklahoma Sooners fans, but it is doubtful to many in the Online Sportsbook world that he will ever reach the same level of popularity as Barry Switzer. Switzer has also written several books and had his commentary on football and life included in books as well. Switzer's father was actually a bootlegger.

Part of the reason why Stoops may not reach the same level of popularity is because he has so many ties to other universities. Of course people who are knowledgeable about the Online Sportsbook world would know that Barry Switzer played college football at the University of Arkansas and was good friends with Jerry Jones during that time period.

Latest Article: 5 Good Reasons Why Golfers Should Learn the Rules
It is estimated that there are more than 60 million people around the world who play golf more than once a year. It is likely that only a very small percentage of these have a good knowledge of the Rules and probably only a handful that have a detailed understanding of all 34 Rules, 126 sub-sections and over 1200 Decisions made by golf’s governing bodies, the R&A and USGA. But why is it important to learn the Rules? Well, I suggest that there are at least five good reasons why players should continually strive to improve their knowledge of the Rules of this great game;

• First, Rule 6-1 specifies that, “the player and his caddie are responsible for knowing the Rules”.
• Second, a good working knowledge of the Rules can often be to your advantage, saving you strokes by avoiding unnecessary penalties. For example, knowing when relief without penalty is available and how to take it. Eliminating penalties will help you to enjoy your sport more.
• Third, when playing in stroke play competitions you have a responsibility to every other entrant to ensure that anyone that you are playing with fully complies with all the Rules. Players aren’t permitted to disregard any breach of the Rules by a fellow competitor, or they are disqualified.
• Fourth, in match play you don’t want your opponent(s) to take an advantage because they know, or they think they know, the Rules better than you.
• And fifth, Rule 1-3 specifies that, “players shall not agree to exclude the operation of any Rule, or to waive any penalty incurred.” The penalty for doing so in both match play and stroke play is disqualification.

Of course, there are many golfers that find the Rules an irritation and claim that they are a deterrent to being able to enjoy a social game with their friends. What difference does it make if someone places their ball when they should be dropping it, or rolls their ball to the side when it comes to rest in a divot made by someone else on the course? If players want to play the game that way, who is to stop them? The answer is that no-one will stop them, they are free to play however they choose, but it is not golf that they are playing. I am sure that if you have watched or played any game regularly, such as soccer, pool, trivial pursuits or poker, you will have been party to arguments as to whether a particular play is valid, or not. Sooner or later players will have to check, or establish, rules so that they can compete fairly against each other on a level playing field. There is only one game of golf, with a universal set of Rules, and if that is the game that you want to play then you have to respect and abide by all of them, so as to preserve the integrity of this wonderful game.

Enjoy your golf more by understanding the Rules better,

Barry Rhodes
