Every minute of ever day, someone is a victim of violence. Everyday, members of society are attacked or violently acted upon while going to work, going to school, going out socially, and many people are victims of violence within our own home. When pondering the sources of violence in our society, many reasons for such actions come to mind. One may say violence is simply an unavoidable part of human nature. One may say that people bring themselves into danger perpetuating a violent scenario. It is also a popular opinion to blame media as the culprit for violence in our society. And though the media may relate to the public what occurs within it’s own society, or cater to the public with violent entertainment, the media, itself, is not to blame for the violence in our society.
It has been in the during the twentieth century that forms and influences of the media have expanded and gained popularity as technology progressed. And though there were effective forms of media prior to the twentieth century, never had the media had the expanse or power that it does today. Before mass publication, radio, and television, people were relatively free of the media in relation to the people of today, and still people took part in and were victims of violence.
When pondering the issue of society’s violence in relation to the media, it may be best to ponder the issue of the media’s violence in relation to the society. All forms of media are developed within the society that they exist in; therefore the movies, the television, the newspapers, and radio shows are products of the society. Violent movies are representations of someone’s, or a group of people’s ideas, ideas that form with in our society.
It is reasonable to see that the media is not some giant entity that is at large in our society. All people contribute to the media it is the people within the society that choose to watch the violent television shows, read the tabloids, pay to see the movies. Considering these points, it is quite east to conclude that violence in society is not caused by the media, but by the people and culture within it.

For those who do not understand how we are governed… Society is built upon a series of rules and understandings. Language is a standard system allows us to communicate among those who use the same language. Money allows the trade of goods for coins of value. Even love has become a commodity.
When we ‘find’ love, we begin courtship rituals, something both governed by an innate ability and by social constructs. Sex and companionship is a primal urge, but society confines those urges through the ‘rules’. Without the ‘rules’, we would merely meet a potential lover, have sex and then devise compatibility from sexual impression. Due to social construct, we must meet our new potential love interests family and friends and make a good impression with them. So through society, when we become involved with someone, we become involved with a web of others. Therefore denying the primal urge in favour of social acceptance.
The concept of money works in a familiar sense. We seek money to satisfy primal need for food and shelter, but society has built a culture of luxury and greed. We now adore those who possess more money than us, we envy what they have ‘achieved’. When in reality, unless we are poverty stricken and in a state of starvation, they are in the same situation as us. We possess enough money to eat and provide shelter. But again we deny our primal self in search of sin.
Language allows us to express ourselves, sometimes in a banal and everyday format, sometimes in a declaration of individuality. However the true sense of individuality is flawed, no one shall ever achieve true individuality, as we must always use the systems that are built around us to communicate the individuality, therefore conforming to social construct. Perfection is something that can never be reached, we live in a society of imperfect rules, so true perfection can never be achieved while we exist inside an imperfect system.

As is occurring in many states, New York is trying to promote Green Building practices. The state is doing it by offering tax credits as financial incentives.
New York Green Building Initiative
The concept of green building isn’t particularly old and has arisen as a result of a better understanding of the impact of buildings on people and the environment. Ideally, green buildings are designed to use non-polluting energy, recyclable resources and systems that avoid health impacting elements. These buildings are extremely environmentally friendly, provide healthier environments for workers and decrease the heat and pollutant situations found in tightly packed structure and population areas such as New York City.
While green building is a nice idea, our country is based on capitalist methods. If green building isn’t cost efficient, no developer is going to pursue it because doing so will give their competition a price advantage. This is where the New York Green Building Initiative comes in.
The Initiative addresses the cost impact of green building by creating financial incentives to promote the process. By going green, developers are given breaks through tax credits. The state is one of the first in the nation to provide such an incentive system, which is a major incentive. The advantage of tax credits over other incentives is they are incredibly useful in reducing tax liability. Unlike a tax deduction which comes off of gross revenues, tax credits are used to reduce the actual amount of tax owed. For instance, if is a developer owes $5 million in taxes and gets a $2 million dollar tax credit, it has to pay $3 million in taxes.
The New York Green Building Initiative offers developers tax credits of up to $2 million dollars for using green building techniques when building structures. The program is in place until 2014. The Initiative is run by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which can provide you with more information on the program and the application process.
The New York Green Building Initiative represents another step in the recognition of the impact our society has on the environment. By promoting better building practices with tax credits, New York is the model for promoting green building.
