Do not write in areas where you have no real interest, even though you may think there is a ready market. Most times you will be wasting your time and your aim is, after all, to become published. Also, in addition to considering local publications, special interest and hobby magazines are often eager to receive material from enthusiasts and these too are excellent markets to consider.
Keep a look out for new publications. Editors of new publications will be keen to build up a pool of writers and, just as my first writing success came from a magazine that had just started, I have also had further successes with other new magazines and newspapers. As the proverb goes, 'The early bird catches the worm,' and, with new publications, it is writers who make that early contact who stand greater chance of having material accepted.
Remember, think local, write on what genuinely interests you and keep a look out for new publications. If you follow this advice, your path to publication and becoming a published writer will be much easier.
