10 Tips for having effective boards
Customer Advisory Boards are a great source of information about your market and your business. Their advice is more valuable than any management consultant's. They provide real world counsel on what you are doing right, what you are doing wrong, and most important -how to stay competitive. After all, they're the customer. They're the one's who buy your stuff. Here's how to use your Customer Advisory Board for best results.
Make it win-win.
As much as they might like to, your customers are probably too busy to be on your board as a favor. Let them know, if they haven't figured it out already, that participating on your board influences your organization to provide better product and service to theirs.
Choose the right members for the right reasons.
Select your board members for qualities and values they bring. Benefit from their insight, perceptions, motivations, and ability to communicate - perhaps even their contrarian view. Avoid figureheads picked for their visibility or high positions - they are likely to skip meetings, and when they show they'll have little to contribute.
Prepare your members.
Apprise members ahead of time of agenda items and provide detailed backgrounders. Prompt their thinking with questions for their consideration. When germane, ask selected advisors to prepare briefings.
Don't sell to the group.
Use your advisory board for their advice. Customers will see through transparent plans to generate more sales. Increased sales will happen anyway - don't prompt for them.
Your board members are special. Treat them that way.
Provide them with quality transportation, hotels, meals, refreshments, and meeting space. Make them feel highly appreciated without the sense you are wasting company money. Have your CEO or outside owners participate whenever appropriate. Acknowledge them publicly and often, and especially in print.
Reward their participation.
They are giving you their time and knowledge gained from experience. What are you giving them? Dinner and theatre or sports tickets, spouse travel, club memberships, small gifts, and product or service discounts are all appropriate.
Fewer meetings the better.
Keep the meetings to two or three per year. Make each meeting count with a full agenda of important issues. Have additional meetings only if you are in a crisis.
Use information technology.

There are many independent artists out there who believe that their work can not even be compared with the work of others for they are unique. However, I have stumbled many times upon these so called independent artists who have something to give to the world and my disappointment was beyond expectations.
I do not doubt the fact that there are people out there with a word to say in fashion, music or any other form of art, but unfortunately I was not lucky enough to discover them, or at least that what I thought. As I was surfing the net in my desperate attempt of finding an online store that sells art not imitations, I came across a site that I never knew existed before. This online store provided everybody with services and products from independent artists. Moreover, you as an artist could place your stuff there and show the world your creations.
This online store is actually much more than that, it is a starting point for every young artist who has an idea and has the means to turn that idea into a project, but lacks the methods of putting himself/ herself out here. Being an independent artist is not an easy job and it can be overwhelming at times. Many quit, others sell out and give up their uniqueness so they can have a shot of being seen and the list could go on. However, once I discovered this site I realized that there are people who care about independent artists and there is at least one online store that promotes these artists, given they are any good.
Because the point that I have not reached yet is about how good as an artist is the person who wants to be seen or heard. Sometimes being talented is not enough and if you do not want to give up your ideas and start being a little more commercial, you will not be accepted as an artist and this is how independent artists are born. However, not everybody can be an artist and this is a fact. Some may have a little talent in them but not enough to succeed in this business.
The online store that I found gives independent artists the chance to show the world what they can do, but as you can imagine it is a little difficult to get there as well. If you want to get there you have to be good, you have to have talent, you have to be your own person and most of all not to be afraid to show everybody what you are made of. This is what a true independent artist does and that is what the online store that I found promotes: art and artists who have something to say. If you believe you have it in you then give it a shot and see if being an artist is your calling. If not, you can always enjoy a little shopping knowing that all the stuff you buy is one of a kind.

As we pass through life we start to realize that people, including us, have a tendency of becoming more and more common. We give up the things that make us special and unique so we can be plain and common for reasons I am sure we do not even understand.
Either we do not have the courage to be unique or we just come to believe that being creative and different are not such good things after all. Luckily for us it is never too late to turn into the person you used to be. It is never too late to break down the barriers and run free and wild. One way to do that is through your clothes.
Independent fashion designers are one of the most obvious examples that we have. They refuse to give into the constant globalization process that seems to evolve with each passing day. What they feel, what they love and most of all how they want to be is expressed in every piece of clothing that they design. This is one true form of art. No two tops are alike as no two feelings could ever be the same.
Independent designer labels can give you that certainty of being one of a kind and still look amazing. Art is an expression of our feelings and thoughts and what better way to show who you really are than through what you wear? So maybe you are not talented and you can not design your own clothes but you just wish you would stop seeing the same skirt you have on three other girls on your way to the store. You love that skirt, that is why you bought it in the first place and there is nothing wrong with other people having that same clothing item as you, but somehow you feel trapped. You feel like a piece of you is missing and at that point you start to wish you were alone in a crowd.
There is a solution to your problem. Choose clothes that combine fashion with art, feelings with places and people, choose independent designer labels and independent fashion designers that look at life and fashion the same way that you do. More than that, become your own designer and show the world that being you is truly amazing and most of all special.
Art can take many shapes and sizes. What independent fashion designers do is take art to another level and pass on the joy of being yourself at all times. It is not what you wear that makes you who you are, but it surely tells a lot about you. People make the clothes and not the other way around. However, the clothes that you wear should be a piece of who you are and this is why independent designer labels can be the best choice for you. Art is found in each clothing item ever made, but how that art is expressed is what makes the difference.
