Latest Article: General information about anorexia
Studies made on patients suffering from anorexia have shown that the women have a significant increased chemical activity in the brain. The part of the brain in which these activities have been seen is responsible for controlling reinforcement and reward. This most certainly explains the excessive drive to lose weight and of course the in satisfaction gained from the loss of the weight.

Comparing healthy women with anorexic women patients has revealed this significant findings. Scientist, using the latest brain imaging technology, have actually found out that the dopamine receptors of the brain, in the basal ganglia area, have an increased activity.

Doctors are very confident that all this research will at some point have proven useful. They are certain that in the near future a drug to treat anorexia will be developed in order to better treat the patients suffering from this terrible disorder.

Anorexia affects some 1 in every one hundred women. Most recently, studies have showed an increase in the male patients also coming down with this illness. The cruel fact is that it’s the deadliest of all psychiatric diseases.

It is known that women with anorexia actually have and obsessive personality and behavior. They most likely avoid harm and actually prefer routine. Doctors in the National Eating Disorder Association have said that most of the women actually resist the therapy and that they have a very distorted perception of them selves.

Finding the connection between the actual disorder and what is happening in the brain has proven to be rather difficult, but must be done no mater what so that scientist and doctors can best understand and treat eating disorders. Studies have shown that while there are few women that develop the disease in it’s purest form, there many more people suffering from some form or another of anorexia.

Brake through in medicine are showing that not society or family behavior is responsible for the appearance of anorexia in young women, but the simple malfunction of a part of the brain. The ultimate goal of scientist is to find a treatment that will finally cure anorexia; still it is also very important to best understand it so that preventing it can be possible in the future.

A lot of work is done by professionals and qualified scientists so that an eventual cure is finally found. Tens of millions of dollars are spent to discover the genetic link to the disease.

Latest Article: Audi AG goes Galactic
Vorsprung durch Technik brand offers competition winner the chance to travel into space at speed of more than 1500mph. How? Vorsprung durch Technik goes galactic for this week as Audi prepares to set one lucky competition winner 62 miles up into suborbital space at speed of more than 1500mph.

The galactic concept was developed in conjunction with the weekly science and technology magazine The New Scientist. “The New Scientist Space Adventure in association with Audi’ complements the A6 advertising campaign revealing that Audi has actually files more patents than NASA. The winner will have to undergo an extensive training before it will be flown at twice the speed of sound in the rocket-powered Xerus Sub-orbital Vehicle in a sub-orbital space, wherein the winner will be able to experience G-force and weightlessness while enjoying the breath taking views of the Blue Planet.

How to Join?

To win the once in a lifetime space adventure entrants must offer the most original and imaginative answer to the question: What is the best patented invention of all time and why? To participants a clue among the most famous and ubiquitous, patented designs include cat’s eyes, bra, television, sun tan lotion and the internet.

The director of Audi UK Jeremy Hicks was delighted that their daring project has come to fruition: “This couldn’t be much better suited to us. Audi is already no stranger to pushing back the boundaries of what is possible technologically and aesthetically, so it is fitting that when the Vorsprung durch Technik brand runs a competition it doesn’t simply see the sky as the limit!” he said.

Jeremy Webb, Editor of the New Scientist, emphasised that contestants will need to employ plenty of ‘outside the box’ thinking: “Entrants will have to be imaginative, as there will be some strong contenders - both familiar and obscure - for the accolade of best-ever patent. The first contender has got to be the telephone. No other invention has fostered communication in the way the telephone has. Next is the humble electric light bulb. It might seem a dim idea but artificial light has made a profound impact on the world - and is still doing so. There are plenty of other ideas out there: the aeroplane, the transistor, penicillin or Velcro. And I’m dying to see a great justification for how bubble wrap changed the world!”

The Audi campaign claims that compared to NASA they have filed 9,621 patents in developing the A6 Saloon and Avant, while the NASA was just able to file 6, 509 patents to date.

The competition will officially open on February 1, 2007 and will end on April 30, 2007. The winner will be announced on May 31 included in the June 2 issue of New Scientist.

Latest Article: Baby Girl Conceive Myths - Debunked!
Have you ever been in a situation to ask (yourself, or someone supposedly knowledgable): “How can I tell from early signs of pregnancy if it’s a girl?”, or anything along the lines of “Is it true that I am having a baby girl if: my belly looks like a giant watermelon/I’m having terible acne outbreaks/sooo craving sweets" etc.

In that case, you must have noticed that there are a lot of so called old wives’ tales concerning baby gender, and an equally large body of rumors floating around – all claiming that can help you find out if you’re carrying a so much wanted baby girl.

From looking at the shape of a pregnant woman’s stomach, to swinging a wedding ring above it to predict if baby is a girl or a boy, all these “techniques” of guessing your baby’s gender are originating from various historic myths belonging to various cultures.

Some say it works, some say it don’t:) I’d say you use it if you have nothing against being surprised when the child eventually gets born…

But, let’s hear what scientist have to say about do-it-yourself baby gender natural selection techniques.

One of the most widespread myths is that if you’re carrying a baby „low" means you will have a girl. Scientists say that there are a lot of factors that determine how you’ll be carrying, most notably the age of the unborn baby and his position in the uterus; if the mother is carrying “high” or “low” also depends on her body type: short waisted woman will look different when pregnant than a long waisted.
According to scientists, whether you’re carrying “high” or “low” got nothing to do with the gender of your unborn baby.

Another widespread method of guessing your baby sex is… well… looking at your pee:) If your urine is of a dull color, it's a girl; if it's a bright color, it's a boy.
Scientists say that color of a pregnant woman’s urine has to do with only one thing: her water intake. The more water you drink, the lighter colored your urine will be, and vice versa.

Some say that if your body hair grows slower since you got pregnant, it’s a sign that you’re having a baby girl. On the contrary, if you’re carrying a baby boy, your body hair tends to grow much faster.
The rationale here being that hormones from baby in your stomach affect the grow of your body hair – and the scientist denying that logic entirely…

Is it true that if you’re craving sweet foods during pregnancy, you’re going to have a girl?
Scientist can’t say what causes pregnant woman to crave one food or another, but don’t think it has anything to do with the sex of baby they’re carrying…

Ah, scientists are ruining all the fun;)
They even suggest that gold ring method needs a reality check… If you haven’t heard about this method of guessing your baby’s sex, let me enlighten you;) You suspend a ring from a string over a pregnant woman's belly and observe its movements: if it’s moving in circles – it’s a girl, and if it swings back and forth – it’s a boy.
Scientists will, unimaginatively, simply state that there’s nothing about the gender of a baby that can influence gravity…:)
