The easy saver program from Walgreens that was discontinued in May of 2009 was a valiant effort to provide incentives and rebates to customers on selected items. Since its discontinuation, there have been encore marketing requests to bring the savings plan back for customers.
The
easy saver program was based on a catalogue of items qualifying for rebates and required customers to use the receipts, fill out forms, mail or submit them online, and then wait for the rebate check. Many of the easy saver complaints were as a result of the time that it took to get the checks in the mail.
Walgreens company spokesperson Robert Elfinger stated, "After research, we learned customers are looking for more straight-forward ways to find savings," and that "Many did not want to purchase a product and wait for a rebate to come in the mail."
Although the research was likely performed in a valid way, it is the contention that the reason for easy saver complaints reducing to the time it takes for the rebated to come in the mail is more likely due to the effort required to submit the rebate form, which makes the time for the rebates appear les equitable.
Additionally, Elfinger stated that there may be encore marketing strategies that are deployed in order to add new ways to save and get rebates; however, there had been no particular decision made as to the shape of an encore easy saver program.
Some of the success in rebate programs comes from rebates not being claimed by customers. It makes sense from a business perspective and has had considerable success with factory rebates; yet, it is unclear how well this easy saver program works on a continual basis.
